A challenge for us all today

Renewing our minds, one captured thought at a time

Hi there,

It’s hard to believe that we’re almost finished with Philippians, but the “Finally” that begins today’s passage gives it away. Paul is beginning to wrap it up. What are the final, important thoughts he wants to leave us with?

Today’s verses remind us that God isn’t only concerned with how we spend our Bible time each day, or that we make it to church each week. He’s concerned with our every thought and action, every moment of the day.

Why do you think that it’s important for us to focus our minds on true and excellent things? How might this affect what we read, watch, and listen to each day?

And beyond the things that are in our thoughts, we are to do more than just think about Paul’s own God-inspired teaching and his example. We are to put it into practice (verse 9)… and then what? It’s the same ending idea as yesterday’s passage: the peace of God will be with us.

Here’s a challenge: for one whole day (maybe today?), try to focus more than usual on your random thoughts. Notice whatever is coming to your mind, what you might be thinking about, where your mind is wandering.

Then when needed, purposefully shift your thoughts to something that is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, or praiseworthy. Like all habits, this one may be hard to form at first, but it will come more naturally to you the more you practice it!

Today’s text is Philippians 4:8-9

8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice.

And the God of peace will be with you.

Encouragement

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
