A quiver full of blessing

Our protection, provision, and prosperity are wholly in and of the Lord.

Meditation

Hi there,

Yesterday we saw the limits of human striving and effort outside of God's guiding and blessing. Everything, from the direction of our work, and provision of our food to the restfulness of our sleep is in His gift.

Today's verses cap the Psalm with a highly personal and practical application of this truth. As much as we strive to control our outcomes and seek for success, It is God alone who gives...and specifically gives us a legacy not in the form of reputation and fame, but in our children.

We are dependent on Him for every gift and blessing and are particularly blessed by Him with children. This has particular relevance for us today, living as we do in a society that often views children as a burden and not a blessing.

Many commentaries like this one at Enduring Word make a particular note of the metaphor of children as being arrows in a quiver, stressing the responsibility to shape, sharpen and aim our children in wisdom and to see them extend our influence beyond our earthly reach.

Taken as a whole we see (as we sing) our protection, provision and prosperity are wholly in, and of, Him.

Today's text is Psalm 127:3-5.

Yesterday’s verses are in grey for context and catch up.

Psalm 127

A song of ascents. Of Solomon.

1 Unless the Lord builds the house,
 the builders labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the guards stand watch in vain.
In vain you rise early
 and stay up late,
toiling for food to eat—
for he grants sleep to those he loves.

Children are a heritage from the Lord,
 offspring a reward from him.
Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
are children born in one’s youth.
Blessed is the man
whose quiver is full of them.
They will not be put to shame
when they contend with their opponents in court.

Encouragement

To humans belong the plans of the heart, but from the Lord comes the proper answer of the tongue.

2 All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord.

3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.

Proverbs 16:1-3
