A song of sorrow ...or of praise?

Remembering the dark heightens the joy of the light

Meditation

Hi there,

Whereas yesterday's verses were an unrestrained outpouring of praise, today's call back to the world the Israelites inhabited before their deliverance.

I noted yesterday that, as with the Song of Moses and Miriam, this song is an act of remembrance from beginning to end. The memory is made sharper by the knowledge of how dire their condition was to contrast with what has been done by God to deliver them.

Before, their highways had been abandoned , the people were cowed and they had no weapons for the fight. It was every man for himself.

But now both the elite (the riders on white donkeys) and the common man (those who walk along the road) are exhorted to join together in praise and commit their salvation to memory through a song of praise.

Today's text is Judges 5:6-11

The Song of Deborah

6 “In the days of Shamgar son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were abandoned; travelers took to winding paths.

7 Villagers in Israel would not fight; they held back until I, Deborah, arose, until I arose, a mother in Israel.

8 God chose new leaders when war came to the city gates, but not a shield or spear was seen among forty thousand in Israel.

9 My heart is with Israel’s princes, with the willing volunteers among the people. Praise the Lord!

10 “You who ride on white donkeys, sitting on your saddle blankets, and you who walk along the road, consider 11 the voice of the singers at the watering places.

They recite the victories of the Lord, the victories of his villagers in Israel.

Encouragement

I couldn't choose between two encouraging texts this morning...so I'll share both!

Psalm 107

1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.

2 Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story— those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, 3 those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.

Romans 15:4

4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

This week we are accompanying the text with Handel’s oratorio, Deborah.
