An unexpected blessing meets an unspoken need

Elisha's unlikely promise proves true

Meditation

Hi there,

Today's verses turn on the woman's exclamation: "No, my lord, please, man of God, don't mislead your servant.”

These words reveal an unspoken need of a woman who lives comfortably, but with the insecurity of an aging husband and the risk of an empty home.

An insecurity that is perilous in her time and place, and one that is clearly recognised by Gehazi and Elisha. They act unilaterally to resolve it, not as a reward for her hospitality, but rather a recognition of her situation.

The gift of a son reveals that God’s attention is not limited only to public history but extends into private longing.

The woman's private devotion does not go unseen.

Today's verses are 2 Kings 4:14-17.

The Shunammite’s Son Restored to Life

14 “What can be done for her?” Elisha asked.

Gehazi said, “She has no son, and her husband is old.”

15 Then Elisha said, “Call her.” So he called her, and she stood in the doorway. 16 “About this time next year,” Elisha said, “you will hold a son in your arms.”

“No, my lord!” she objected. “Please, man of God, don’t mislead your servant!”

17 But the woman became pregnant, and the next year about that same time she gave birth to a son, just as Elisha had told her.
