Taking His promises back to Him
Meditation
Hi there,
This season will focus entirely on prayer, providing passages from the Bible that are either prayers themselves or explanations of the importance of prayer.
This first week, we will copy out the three passages of the Bible that comprise the "Shema," one of the most important and foundational prayers in Judaism.
Jesus quoted Deuteronomy verses 4-5 when asked about the greatest commandment (Mark 12:29-30), reinforcing for Christians the call to wholehearted love and devotion to God.
The first verse of the "Shema" is considered the essential declaration of the Jewish faith β the Lord is our God, the Lord is one.
The passage that follows details how that faith should be lived: Love God with all of your being, teach it to your children, recite it when you wake and lie down, and bind it as a symbol on your body.
These passages highlight the truth that "prayer is asking for what is already promised," so when we copy these verses, we are getting two for one. Prayers and Promises.
Today's text is Deuteronomy 6:4-9
Deuteronomy 6:4-9
4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.
7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
Encouragement
The best praying man is the man who is most believingly familiar with the promises of God. After all, prayer is nothing but taking Godβs promises to him, and saying to him, βDo as thou hast said.β
Prayer is the promise utilized. A prayer which is not based on a promise has no true foundation.
