At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow

Encouragement and comfort in Christ

Meditation

Hi there,

“Therefore…” Paul uses this word often to connect his thoughts for us. He’s leading us here from one part of the Christ Hymn to the next. Yesterday we copied out the mindset of Christ, focused on humility and obedience. Today we see God’s response.

God has exalted (or “restored”) Jesus and given him the name above all names—Jesus Christ is Lord (verse 11)! There is an old hymn based in part on Pauls’ Christ Hymn that I love. The first verse reads:

At the Name of Jesus

Every knee shall bow,

Every tongue confess him

King of glory now;

’Tis the Father’s pleasure

We should call him Lord,

Who from the beginning

Was the mighty Word.*

Just two days ago, we copied Philippians 2:1, which mentioned “encouragement from being united with Christ” and “comfort from his love.” Reflect on Paul’s Christ Hymn for a moment and think about the encouragement and comfort that you can find here because of your personal relationship with Jesus.

* If you’d like to read the rest of the lyrics or listen to the tune as a part of your Bible time today, I encourage you to do that! You can read and listen here.

Today’s text is Philippians 2:9-11

Imitating Christ’s Humility

9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,

10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Encouragement

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Galatians 2:20
