Hi there,

Today we jump into the season of Thanksgiving, copying out the first three verses of Psalm 136. By the end of the week we will have copied out the whole Psalm, and will have the repeated refrain "His love endures forever" indelibly imprinted on our hearts.

Known as the Great Hallel, (the Great Praise), Psalm 136 overflows with gratitude for God's goodness towards His people. The liturgical repetition underscores the essential nature of God's mercy, expressed through His loyal love and covenant love (hesed).

The Psalm calls for, and models, constant Thanksgiving. Subsequent verses put flesh on the bones of the grounds for Thanksgiving, while today's verses are a simple call to Thanksgiving to the Lord of Lords for the simple reason that "he is good."

Today's text is Psalm 136: 1-3

Psalm 136

¹ Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
His love endures forever.
² Give thanks to the God of gods.
His love endures forever.
³ Give thanks to the Lord of lords:
His love endures forever.
