Meditation

Hi there,

David wrote this psalm after the prophet Nathan confronted him about his adultery with Bathsheba and his murder of Uriah (2 Samuel 12).

Today's verses capture David’s honest and sorrowful confession of his sin, acknowledging how deeply it dishonored God. Even though Uriah is the earthly victim of David's sin, all sin is injurious to God.

For comparison, I've lined up the metrical version side by side with the NIV version. If you have time, you might like to copy out both.

Today's verses are Psalm 51:1-4

¹ After thy loving-kindness, Lord, have mercy upon me:
For thy compassions great, blot out all mine iniquity.

² Me cleanse from sin, and thoroughly wash
from mine iniquity:

³ For my transgressions I confess; my sin I ever see.

⁴ ‘Gainst thee, thee only, have I sinned, in thy sight done this ill;

That when thou speak’st thou may’st be just, and clear in judging still.

¹ Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.

² Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.

³ For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me

⁴ Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.

⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
