Day 3. Abigail steps in

Abigail acts, organizing provisions and setting out to head David off

Meditation

Hi there,

The narrative in today's verses is neatly split into two halves.

We hear of Abigail's decisive action organizing a large store of provisions for David and setting out to head him off and then of David's intention to decimate Nabal and his men in revenge for his insult.

The fact that Abigail was able to muster such a large offering for David at a moment's notice serves as more proof of Nabal's lack of generosity and meanness of spirit.

While David's anger is justified, and his revenge is expected by Nabal's servants (1 Samuel 25: 17), his plan is none the less sinful.

Abigail's actions and her words will ultimately atone for Nabal's sin and prevent the full expression of David's.

Today's verses are 1 Samuel 25:18-22

David, Nabal and Abigail

18 Abigail acted quickly. She took two hundred loaves of bread, two skins of wine, five dressed sheep, five seahs of roasted grain, a hundred cakes of raisins and two hundred cakes of pressed figs, and loaded them on donkeys.

19 Then she told her servants, “Go on ahead; I’ll follow you.” But she did not tell her husband Nabal.

20 As she came riding her donkey into a mountain ravine, there were David and his men descending toward her, and she met them.

21 David had just said, “It’s been useless—all my watching over this fellow’s property in the wilderness so that nothing of his was missing. He has paid me back evil for good.

22 May God deal with David, be it ever so severely, if by morning I leave alive one male of all who belong to him!”

Encouragement

1 To humans belong the plans of the heart,
but from the Lord comes the proper answer of the tongue.

2 All a person’s ways seem pure to them,
but motives are weighed by the Lord.

3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do,
and he will establish your plans.

4 The Lord works out everything to its proper end—
even the wicked for a day of disaster.
