Day 5. Abigail is blessed and released.

David sends Abigail home in peace. Only to find that there is no peace at home

Meditation

Hi there,

As we saw yesterday's passage, Abigail prevails upon David to avert bloodshed and retain his conscience. He recognizes this as a gift and blesses her. He recognizes this as a gift and blesses her for it.

Sending her home " in peace " when she arrives she finds anything but with her husband "in high spirits and very drunk." Again, wisely, Abigail holds her fire.

And Nabal meets his inevitable end.

I know this has been a long week with a number of lengthy passages. So congratulations for sticking with it, I hope you agree with me that this is one of the truly remarkable stories that we've covered in Bible Copy Club.

We're going to finish off tomorrow with a final passage that brings the story to a natural and pleasing conclusion.

Today's verses are 1 Samuel 25:32-38

David, Nabal and Abigail

32 David said to Abigail, “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has sent you today to meet me. 33 May you be blessed for your good judgment and for keeping me from bloodshed this day and from avenging myself with my own hands.

34 Otherwise, as surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, who has kept me from harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, not one male belonging to Nabal would have been left alive by daybreak.”

35 Then David accepted from her hand what she had brought him and said, “Go home in peace. I have heard your words and granted your request.”

36 When Abigail went to Nabal, he was in the house holding a banquet like that of a king. He was in high spirits and very drunk. Again highlighting the meanness of spirit that drove his original denial of David's request

So she told him nothing at all until daybreak.

37 Then in the morning, when Nabal was sober, his wife told him all these things, and his heart failed him and he became like a stone.

38 About ten days later, the Lord struck Nabal and he died.

Encouragement

12 Kings detest wrongdoing,
for a throne is established through righteousness.

13 Kings take pleasure in honest lips;
they value the one who speaks what is right.

14 A king’s wrath is a messenger of death,
but the wise will appease it.

15 When a king’s face brightens, it means life;
his favor is like a rain cloud in spring.

Proverbs 16:12-15
