Did that really happen?!
Song is an act of memory as well as celebration

Meditation
Hi there,
Welcome back to this "season of songs" from Bible Copy Club.
We are starting out copying Exodus 15: 1-18.
Moses' song of celebration at the deliverance of Israel from the Egyptians is the first of 185 songs recorded in the Bible...and celebrates one of its greatest miracles and mercies.
God parts the Red Sea, allowing the children of Israel to cross on dry ground, escaping Pharaoh’s army. When the Egyptians pursue them, God shuts the sea over them, washing away chariots and horsemen.
Then Moses leads the men in what seems like a spontaneous song of praise to God, while Miriam leads the women in the chorus:
Sing to the LORD, for He is highly exalted; The horse and his rider He has hurled into the sea.
Also known as "The Song at the Sea." It's striking how little introduction this song is given. Chapter 14 tells the whole story of the crossing of the Red Sea in almost journalistic detail concluding "That day the Lord saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore."
Then Moses and the Israelites seem to spontaneously burst into song. Almost as if the song is an act of memory as well as celebration.
These opening verses have something of the "Did that really happen?!" about them. A genuine sense of wonder fills the Israelite's hearts with praise.
Today's text is Exodus 15: 1-3
The Song of Moses and Miriam
15 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord:
“I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea.
2 “The Lord is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him. 3 The Lord is a warrior; the Lord is his name.
