Ephesians 6: The harmonious home
A home is to be characterized by what is right and relationally healthy

Meditation
Hi there,
Chapter numbers in the Bible were not originally placed by the inspired writers but were added later by men to organize contextual flow and help in locating passages.
Sometimes it’s helpful to read Scripture as though the chapter break doesn’t exist. In ch. 6:1-4, our meditation on the theme of domestic harmony continues from ch. 5.
While writing today, note the promise God makes to children and the awesome responsibility that it places on parents, especially the father who is the head and will give account to God.
This promise is taken directly from the fifth of the Ten Commandments and repeated here to emphasize the importance of taking the raising of children seriously.
Parenting and how the child is taught to be “parented” is of considerable consequence. A harmonious home is a well-ordered home offering security and insulation from the effects of peers, media, culture, and other influences.
God’s desire is for a home to be characterized not so much by rules, regulations, and rigor, but by what is right and relationally healthy.
Today's verses are Ephesians 6:1-4. (Tomorrow's verses are in grey for context).
6 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3 “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”
4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart.
7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, 8 because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.
9 And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.
Encouragement
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his love for those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
13 As a father has compassion on his children,
so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;
14 for he knows how we are formed,
he remembers that we are dust.
Psalm 103:11-14
