God's laws are foundations not fences

The law convicts and compels us to see God's love

God’s love is sewn into the fabric of our existence

Hi there,

It might at first seem counter-intuitive to us to have covered the Ten Commandments in a season titled "God is Love."

But as I copied out these passages this week, I could see more clearly that God's law is a gift that, in a practical sense, makes our lives easier to navigate while at the same time showing us God's heart.

So familiar are we with the commandments and prohibitions we find in our Bibles that we simply take them for granted and assume that the commitment to honoring God and living peaceably and lovingly with our neighbors is "self-evident."

But these ideas are not "natural". Indeed, whole societies and even our own selves war against these strictures habitually. Far from being second nature, they are a gift of Grace.

These laws are not add-ons or afterthoughts. They are the very foundation for living vibrantly and lovingly in the relationship, first with Him and then with others.

With His law, we are not left to our own devices to determine right from wrong. To decide how to live well.

He knows that sin has left us vulnerable to envy, covetousness, greed, and malice. These tendencies are not simply insults to His holiness and righteousness that separate us from Him.

They also weaken and depress us. Which is why the commands so often carry the promise "so you will live long in the land."

By giving us His law, God shows he is "for" us and won't forsake us.

His law is clear, compelling, and conclusive evidence that He is Love.

Next week we're coping out a chapter from Hosea which emphasizes God's love for a sinning world.
