God's promise of salvation

A surprising passage to end the week

Meditation

Hi there,

As we work through each of the passages in this season, we see their purpose is to unfold the story of God's dealings with His people chronologically across time.

So, this second passage took me by surprise as I set it up. I've listened to and attended services in the "Nine Lessons" format for decades but never really questioned this passage, which seems out of place.

In the order of service, an explanation is provided for each passage. In this case, it reads, "God promises faithful Abraham that in his seed shall all nations of the earth be blessed."

The key word here is "promises." This passage contains four promises (which I have highlighted), that are actually reiterations of a promise originally made in Genesis 12 v2:

"2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:"

This passage was chosen to highlight and confirm the assurance we have in God's promise of salvation.

Today's passage is Genesis 22: 15-18.

Genesis 22

15 And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,

16 And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:

17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;

18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

Encouragement

God's assurance of His salvation is sealed with an oath; "by myself have I sworn."

We've reached the end of this first week and turned the corner from the fall to God's confirmation of his plan of salvation.

Next week through Isaiah, we will learn much more about the form of the Savior.
