Harmony in the workplace

Work as to the Lord

Meditation

Hi there,

Today as we close out our study in Ephesians 4-6, Paul reminds us that work is good, important, and rewarded accordingly by God who is the Master we all serve as we walk harmoniously through life.

Just as the husband, wife, and children answer to and serve as unto the Lord, so too the servant and master.

Paul urges faithful, diligent, and reliable work ethic whether others are watching or not.

In Bible times, the domestic realm or “home” included one’s job, occupation or “work life”. The terms “servant” and “master” have lost their meaning in modern society but it’s helpful to think of them as employee and employer.

If you work for someone else, v. 5-8 are of great consequence to you. Notice the force of Paul’s admonition.

If you’re the boss, v. 9 is for you...but at the end of the day, we all work for someone: a boss, client, organization, and most importantly, the Lord.

Look out for tomorrow's email with this week's study reflection questions.

Today's verses are Ephesians 6:5-9. (Yesterday's verses are in grey for context).

6 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3 “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart.

7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, 8 because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.

9 And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.

Encouragement

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
