- He is holy, He is holy
He is holy, He is holy
God’s sovereign reign is a cause for joy and hope, and His holiness is the foundation of our worship and reverence.
Meditation
The structure and content of today's verses closely mirror the passage from Isaiah 6 that we copied out on the first days of this week.
First, there is an emphatic declaration of God's supreme reign, which evokes awe and literal trembling of the earth.
Enthroned between cherubim, His holiness and justice invoke the call to respond in reverence and worship just as Isaiah did.
...and as we saw in Isaiah 6, His holiness is reinforced by the refrain "He is Holy" three times.
Isaiah's vision is a very personal one, whereas this call is more general. But the weight of His glory is the same. God’s sovereign reign is a cause for joy and hope, and His holiness is the foundation of our worship and reverence.
Today's text is Psalm 99:1-5. Today's verses are in black, and tomorrow's verses are in grey for context.
Psalm 99
1 The Lord reigns,
let the nations tremble;
he sits enthroned between the cherubim,
let the earth shake.
2 Great is the Lord in Zion;
he is exalted over all the nations.
3 Let them praise your great and awesome name—
he is holy.
4 The King is mighty, he loves justice—
you have established equity;
in Jacob you have done
what is just and right.
5 Exalt the Lord our God
and worship at his footstool;
he is holy.
6 Moses and Aaron were among his priests,
Samuel was among those who called on his name;
they called on the Lord
and he answered them.
7 He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud;
they kept his statutes and the decrees he gave them.
8 Lord our God,
you answered them;
you were to Israel a forgiving God,
though you punished their misdeeds.[a]
9 Exalt the Lord our God
and worship at his holy mountain,
for the Lord our God is holy.
Encouragement
"How glad we ought to be that the Lord reigns! Kings of the earth often cause oppression and injustice, but the reign of our Lord is the hope of the people. Let us bow before His throne in deep adoration, for 'Holy is He.'"

As a companion to this week's series, I can't recommend Sproul's masterclass on the "Holiness Of God" enough. Available free on YouTube.
