How to be a shining light in the world

We are his instruments...and what a privilege that is!

Meditation

Hi there,

“Therefore…” Paul connects us again with what we’ve just copied—about Jesus’ obedience and servanthood. We are to behave in the same way, in order to “work out [or carry out, cultivate] our salvation.”

But of course, it’s not really we who are doing the work—it’s God working in and through us! And why? For his own purposes. We are his instruments, and what a privilege that is.

But now here’s the hard part. How are we to be his instruments in the world? By doing “everything without grumbling or arguing.” That’s a real challenge, isn’t it? But Jesus didn’t grumble or argue, and if we’re to imitate him, that’s what God wants us to strive for, as well.

And why do we do this?

So that we can be blameless and pure, and shine as lights in the world. As we hold firmly to Christ and become more like him, we will be a light to others.

For me, this reminder to not grumble or complain is a big challenge in my everyday life. But the payoff, ultimately, is joy.

Just as Paul rejoices (twice!) at the end of this passage, living in a way that pleases God brings joy to ourselves and to those around us.

Today’s text is Philippians 2:12-18

Do Everything Without Grumbling

12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.

Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky 16 as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.

17 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. 18 So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

Encouragement

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:14–16
