Humility in action

God's supply of grace is always greater than the depth of our weakness

Hi there,

Having just established that grace is given only to the humble, James immediately transitions into a rapid series of imperatives showing what humility actually looks like in practice:

Humility begins with submission to God and active resistance to the devil. Humility is sustained through repentance and drawing near to God.

Humility results in an end to self-righteous pride and an acceptance that only God can judge.

David Guzik goes into these ideas in detail in his talk on the second half of James 4, which I've linked here and below.

Today's verses are James 4:7-12.

Submit Yourselves to God

⁷Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. ⁸Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

⁹Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. ¹⁰Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

¹¹Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it.

¹²There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?

Encouragement

¹³ Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper,
but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

¹⁴ Blessed is the one who always trembles before God,
but whoever hardens their heart falls into trouble.
