Jehovah Nissi. The Lord Is My Banner

Victory comes when God’s people rally to Him, depend on Him, and remain under His banner.

Meditation

Hi there,

Jehovah-Nissi, “the Lord is my banner,” appears only once in the Bible; in Exodus 17:15 after Israel’s victory over the Amalekites.

A banner in battle marks the place where people gather, giving the participants an identity, direction, and focus. During the battle, Moses' lifted hands, holding the rod of God, are a visible sign of dependence on God. As long as his hands were raised, Israel prevailed; when they fell, the battle turned.

It would be human to believe that the power is coming from Moses, but as we see, while the spirit may be willing, the flesh is weak, and Moses cannot sustain lifting his hands without help.

Ultimately, the battle isn't won by human strategy or strength, but by God’s intervention. That’s why Moses builds the altar and names it Jehovah-Nissi, to fix the meaning in place.

Victory comes when God’s people rally to Him, depend on Him, and remain under His banner. The victory belonged not to Moses or Joshua but to God, and the people prevailed because they stood under His name and His authority.

Today's text is Exodus 17: 8-16

The Amalekites Defeated

8 The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9 Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.”

10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning.

12 When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.

14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.”

15 Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. 16 He said, “Because hands were lifted up against the throne of the Lord, the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.”

The Branch From Jesse

11 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—
the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of might,
the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—
3 and he will delight in the fear of the Lord.
