Hi there,

Copying out verses often brings surprises.​

Like you, I'm familiar with these lines, and it was my recollection that Jesus died and then the curtain in the temple was torn in two.​

In Luke, as we can see in today's verses, the curtain was torn in two, and then Jesus gave up his life.​

In both Mark and Matthew, the curtain is torn in two as Jesus gives up his life. It's a small detail (and one that likely has little significance), but slowing down to copy out verses leads you to have these thoughts... and the investigation builds a deeper knowledge of the Bible.

Jesus came to end the separation between God and man; the tearing of the curtain is the dramatic and climactic visual statement of this truth.

The Death of Jesus

⁴⁴ It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, ⁴⁵ for the sun stopped shining.

And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.​

⁴⁶ Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.​

⁴⁷ The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” ⁴⁸ When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away.

⁴⁹ But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
