Jesus is Jehovah Rapha. The Lord who heals
All physical restoration is temporary...but forgiveness restores our relationship with God

Meditation
Hi there,
Luke's gospel records much of Jesus' healing ministry beginning in chapter four, when Jesus casts out a demon and heals Mary and many others in Capernaum.
Immediately prior to the events of today's passage, Jesus has healed a man with leprosy. I've chosen today's passage to show Jesus's fulfillment as Jehovah Rapha, as it is the first passage that explicitly links Jesus's power to forgive sins, as God, with the physical healing he administers.
Jesus addresses the man's sin before he addresses his paralysis, and that shift reveals the real priority. While physical suffering is visible and urgent, sin is a far deeper problem. It separates us from God, not just temporarily, but permanently.
But the physical healing is also vital in this story because forgiveness on its own would be invisible and belongs to God alone. The healing that follows, whilst not as important as the forgiveness itself, is the evidence. It proves to the crowd and particularly the Pharisees, that forgiveness, which can't be seen, has truly taken place.
All physical restoration is temporary. Even the healed body will ultimately fail, but forgiveness restores our relationship with God, addressing the one thing that carries an eternal consequence.
Jesus is Jehovah Rapha.
Today's text is Luke 5:17-24.
Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man
17 One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.
18 Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. 19 When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
20 When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”
21 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
22 Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?
24 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”
Encouragement
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
The cross is the ultimate healing, restoring our relationship with God, defeating sin, and offering eternal life
Bonus: This video gives a great overview of the name Jehovah-Rapha, its origin in Exodus, and fulfillment in Jesus.
