✍️ Jesus questions Peter
Peter's humble response to Jesus' questioning shows he is ready to lead again
Meditation
Hi there,
Today's short passage is one of the most memorable and powerful of the stories recounted between Jesus' resurrection and his ascension.
Peter is first forgiven and then (as we'll copy out tomorrow) restored
All the commentaries I've read on this passage highlight the threefold repetition of Jesus' question, "Do you love me?" as mirroring his three-time denial of Jesus. The symmetry between the offense and the forgiveness is clear
Most importantly, Peter's assurance that he does love him is a humble one. He longer boasts of in his own strength, but rather in Jesus' power, "Lord you know all things.
The rhythmic back and forth makes this passage particularly enjoyable to copy out.
Today's text is John 21:15–17.
Jesus Reinstates Peter
15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”
17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”
Encouragement
"As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us."
