How we can know Jesus
Meditation
Hi there,
John's is the only account that does not end with Jesus being taken up into heaven. Indeed, it's ending seems almost flat in comparison to the other Gospels.
Jesus' last words in John's Gospel are the command to Peter to focus on his commission; "You must follow me."
John concludes his Gospel by addressing a rumor that had arisen from reports of this last conversation with Jesus, namely, that John would not die.
In so doing, he points to a contemporary controversy that shows us how current his Gospel is and then restates that we can trust his testimony because it is first-hand.
Unlike the other Gospels, which end with the finality of Jesus's ascension into heaven, John's is open-ended, leaving us to wonder at Jesus's works even to this day.
Today's text is John 21:23–25.
Jesus Reinstates Peter
23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers that this disciple would not die.
But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?
24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.
25 Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
Encouragement
While all the deeds of Jesus may be unknowable, he is not. He has made himself known to us and continues to do so to this day.
