Your joy-filled July starts here

Meditation
Hi there,
I’ve been copying out whole books of the Bible for a few years now, and the book of Philippians has a special place in my heart. It was the first entire book that I copied, and maybe it’s the first entire book you’ll copy, as well. This book is known as Paul’s “epistle of joy.”
In fact, the theme of “joy” and “rejoice” run so heavily and so often through this letter that I encourage you to highlight or mark somehow each time you write one of those words. When you finish the book, you’ll be able to go back and see clearly how often Paul reminds us of the joy of the gospel and of knowing Jesus.
Paul begins this letter as he usually does, by identifying himself (and Timothy) as being in the service of Christ. You’ll notice right away the genuine love and friendship that he has with “all God’s holy people” (or “saints”) at Philippi. This letter isn’t just to the religious leaders—it’s to everyone.
Today’s final verse is well-known and is such a good reminder that God has started something good in you, and he isn’t finished with you yet. Taking the time to write out this verse (and so many more to come in this book) is a powerful way to reflect on God’s promises to each of us, that we are unfinished until Christ comes again.
It’s interesting that Paul wrote this “letter of joy” during a particularly difficult time in his own life. We’ll see why it was difficult in tomorrow’s passage.
Today’s text is Philippians 1:1-6
1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus,
To all God’s holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons:
2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Thanksgiving and Prayer
3 I thank my God every time I remember you. 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Encouragement
fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
