Look! James' rebuke against hoarding

When we leave God out of our plans, we will ultimately leave him out of our walk.

Hi there,

At first, as I read this, I thought that James had switched to a new topic. However, I can see that it's really the second, more severe half of his rebuke against self-reliant and arrogant living.

In James 4:13-17, he confronts the arrogant presumption in planning, and here he exposes what happens when that self-reliant mindset goes unchecked and turns into exploitation.

When we leave God out of our plans, we will ultimately leave him out of our walk. But James warns us that the Lord Almighty hears the cries of the exploited.

David Guzik goes into these ideas in detail in his talk on the first half of James 5, which I've linked here and below.

Today's verses are James 5:1-6.

Warning to Rich Oppressors

5 Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. ² Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. ³ Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days.

⁴ Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. ⁵ You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.

⁶ You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you.
