Michal. A daughter in Saul's court

Michal's love for David is used to ensnare him

Meditation

Hi there,

The next story in our series is a complete counterpoint to Abigail's story last week.

Whereas Abigail showed agency, courage, and daring and had the power to change change David's heart, Michal who we meet this week is the subject of men's power and is used by Saul to manipulate David.

It will be useful for you to read from the beginning of 1 Samuel Chapter 18 but I've begun the copy work at verse 17 as this is where Saul introduces first his older daughter Merab and then when David hesitates his younger daughter Michal.

We're told that Michal loves David and that Saul sees this as a good thing not for her or for David but for him in his plan to rid himself of a more popular competitor.

So very early on the die is cast for Michal to be used as a pawn (willingly or unwillingly) in power struggles between men.

Today's verses are 1 Samuel 18:17-22

Saul’s Growing Fear of David

17 Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage; only serve me bravely and fight the battles of the Lord.” For Saul said to himself, “I will not raise a hand against him. Let the Philistines do that!”

18 But David said to Saul, “Who am I, and what is my family or my clan in Israel, that I should become the king’s son-in-law?” 19 So

when the time came for Merab, Saul’s daughter, to be given to David, she was given in marriage to Adriel of Meholah.

20 Now Saul’s daughter Michal was in love with David, and when they told Saul about it, he was pleased. 21 “I will give her to him,” he thought, “so that she may be a snare to him and so that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” So Saul said to David, “Now you have a second opportunity to become my son-in-law.”

22 Then Saul ordered his attendants: “Speak to David privately and say, ‘Look, the king likes you, and his attendants all love you; now become his son-in-law.’”
