Michal. Reflections on the week
Michal's divided heart and Saul's escalating paranoia

Meditation
Hi there,
This week, we copied out 1 Samuel 18:17- 19:17, focusing on the complex story of Michal, daughter of Saul and wife of David, as well as the escalating spiritual decline of King Saul himself.
These passages from 1 Samuel revealed many examples of loyalty, self-preservation, and the subtle ways our hearts can become divided.
Just as Michal and Jonathan are subject to these emotions so are we. This morning take a few minutes to consider how this story reflects tensions in our own lives.
When Michal lied to her father, she chose to protect herself from his anger rather than standing on the truth of what she had done. Do you find yourself compromising the truth or spiritually justifying a decision when you are primarily motivated by a desire for self-preservation, comfort, or fear of confrontation?
Michal’s loyalty to David was complicated by the presence of a household idol (teraphim), signifying a divided heart or a reliance on something other than God alone. Do you have a spiritual comfort, belief, or pattern of control that you still hold onto—a personal "idol"—that prevents you from being fully devoted and reliant on God's provision and guidance?
King Saul's fear and paranoia about losing his power led him to repeatedly try to murder David, escalating to the point of commanding his own son and servants to participate. Do you have unaddressed fears and spiritual jealousies in your own life that lead to escalating destructive actions or attitudes toward others? Is there a specific act of faith that can break that cycle?
I've included links below to sermons from David Guzik on these verses if you want to dig deeper.
We'll be back next week with the conclusion to this story.
