Hi there,

Saul's attempts to have David have up to this point been oblique. Putting him in harms way so the Philistines would kill him.

However as verse 1 Samuel 18:30 makes plain, David continually succeeds in overcoming them and with each success his popularity increases and with it Saul's paranoia.

In Chapter 19 we see Saul reverting to more direct methods instructing his son Jonathan and their attendants to kill David​

It's notable that both of Saul's children Jonathan and Michal have deep feelings for David and are prepared to back them by tipping David off and offering him protection.

Today's verses are 1 Samuel 18:28-19:3

Saul’s Growing Fear of David

²⁸ When Saul realized that the Lord was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David, ²⁹ Saul became still more afraid of him, and he remained his enemy the rest of his days.

³⁰ The Philistine commanders continued to go out to battle, and as often as they did, David met with more success than the rest of Saul’s officers, and his name became well known.

19. Saul Tries to Kill David

Saul told his son Jonathan and all the attendants to kill David. But Jonathan had taken a great liking to David ² and warned him, “My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding and stay there.

³ I will go out and stand with my father in the field where you are. I’ll speak to him about you and will tell you what I find out.”

Encouragement

Deliver me from my enemies, O God;
be my fortress against those who are attacking me.

² Deliver me from evildoers
and save me from those who are after my blood.​
