Hi there,

The versions of the psalms we're copying out this season come from the Scottish Psalter, first published in 1564 and, after a century of refinement and comparison with Hebrew texts, authorized by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in the 1650 Scottish Metrical Psalter.​

This version produced classic renderings still sung today. This is my wife's copy.

Metrical Psalms caught on as the rhyme and regular meter (especially Common Meter) allowed ordinary people to memorize vast portions of Scripture easily.

Also, "Common Meter" meant congregations could fit a single psalm text to dozens of familiar folk and melodies. If you look closely at the picture of Karen's "split leaf psalter", the tune settings at the top are split from the psalms at the bottom. The page halves can be turned independently of each other.

Any number of different tunes can be matched to the verses below.

Today's verses are Psalm 23:4-6. Yesterday's verses are provided in grey for context and catch-up.

¹ The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want.
​² He makes me down to lie
In pastures green: he leadeth me
the quiet waters by.​

³ My soul he doth restore again;
and me to walk doth make
Within the paths of righteousness,
ev’n for his own name’s sake.​

⁴ Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale,
yet will I fear none ill:
For thou art with me; and thy rod
and staff me comfort still.

⁵ My table thou hast furnished
in presence of my foes;
My head thou dost with oil anoint,
and my cup overflows.​

⁶ Goodness and mercy all my life
shall surely follow me:
And in God’s house for evermore
my dwelling-place shall be.

Encouragement

¹⁵ I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down, declares the Sovereign Lord. ¹⁶ I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy. I will shepherd the flock with justice.
