Paul lays down a challenge

Put others first

Meditation

Hi there,

Paul is a deep thinker, but he tries to connect his thoughts very clearly for his readers—I’m grateful for that!

Today he begins with Therefore, which connects us back to the last passage we copied. We are all citizens of God’s kingdom together. In verse one today, he reminds us of the blessings we share as brothers and sisters in Christ.

Then Paul lays down a challenge: “Make my joy complete.”

He doesn’t ask for money. He doesn’t ask for more helpers or for material goods. Instead he challenges them to think and behave in certain ways as those who follow Jesus.

He asks them to be of one spirit and one mind; to not act out of selfishness or vanity; to be humble; and to look to the interests of others rather than themselves.

These verses apply to us even today.

If we call ourselves Christians, we must be humble and put others before ourselves. For most of us, this doesn’t come easily.

But there’s a reason that Paul calls us to do this—we have an example in Jesus. As you copy this passage today, you can look forward to the next two days, where we’ll write out one of the great “hymns” of the entire Bible.

Today’s text is Philippians 2:1-4

Imitating Christ’s Humility

2 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.

3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Encouragement

9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.

10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

Romans 12:9-10
