Remembering God's faithfulness to us

Today's verses repeat three times the importance of confronting our sins and our spiritual condition head-on.

Meditation

This week, we are focusing on God's attribute of Faithfulness, taking our initial passage from the book of Lamentations.

As the title suggests, Lamentations is a collection of poetic laments attributed to the prophet Jeremiah, mourning the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC. Written amidst the physical devastation of the city, it highlights grief, judgment, repentance, and hope, reflecting Israel's sorrow while affirming God's sovereignty and faithfulness.

Lamentations 3 as a whole, and the verses we'll copy in particular, are the emotional and theological center of the book. While the surrounding chapters focus on the collective suffering of Jerusalem and its people, chapter 3 is written from an exclusively personal perspective, moving from outright despair to profound hope.

Today's verses repeat three times the importance of confronting our sins and our spiritual condition head-on. Far from trying to put these out of sight and out of mind, it's in the remembrance that we experience the full weight of His compassion.

Today's text is Lamentations 3:19-22

The verses to copy today are in black. Tomorrow's verses are in grey for context and clarity.

Lamentations 3

19 I remember my affliction and my wandering,
the bitterness and the gall.
20 I well remember them,
and my soul is downcast within me.
21 Yet this I call to mind
and therefore I have hope:

22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.

23 They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;
therefore I will wait for him.”

25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
to the one who seeks him;
26 it is good to wait quietly
for the salvation of the Lord.
27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke
while he is young.

Encouragement

"In the recollection of God's deeds in history, faith finds its foundation, and the believer is reminded of God's faithfulness and promise."
