Safe in the shadow of the Lord

We are shielded by day, and guarded by night

Meditation

Hi there,

When my daughters were very young and at their most vulnerable, my wife and I would pray today's lines over them as a prayerful blessing.

They were, of course, too young to hear or understand, but these words were consoling to us. Knowing as we did that we might let them down in our frailties, but that He wouldn't.

The contrasts of "day" and "night", "sun" and "moon", show God's protection is complete and unbroken...and also speak subtly to a protection from physical threats (the sun can burn, dehydrate and kill) and spiritual threats (the dark night of the soul).

God is not distant. He provides this physical and spiritual rest and peace from close at hand. So close that he can shade us.

His presence literally covers us, just as we cover our own children from the burning sun, biting wind, or pull them close after a disturbing nightmare.

Today's text is Psalm 121:5-6. Today's text is in black, text from earlier in the week and the text for tomorrow is in grey for context and catchup.

A song of ascents.

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Lord watches over you
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

7 The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.

Praise the Lord.
