Tell her to help me!

Devotion to Jesus is the engine for good works

Hi there,

Our next encounter with Jesus will be very familiar.

It was a particular favorite of our daughters growing up, following hard on the heels of another favorite known in our household as "The man with the ouwies" AKA The Good Samaritan.

Whereas the parable of the Good Samaritan taught the importance of compassion and action over religiosity, this story refines and complements this by emphasizing the importance of sitting at Jesus’ feet and listening—showing that both service and devotion are important, but devotion to Jesus takes priority.

I've highlighted the word "distracted" at the center of this passage, as Martha's fault isn't to be industrious, but rather to allow her industry to distract her from her devotions.

Today's text is Luke 10:38-40

At the Home of Martha and Mary

38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.

40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Encouragement

The way to get the revival is to begin at the Master’s feet; you must go there with Mary and afterwards you may work with Martha.
