Telling and retelling the truth

We remind ourselves of the truth through song

Meditation

Hi there,

Something I have been reflecting on this week as I've copied out this psalm is the reason for the change from the first person "I lift up my eyes" in the first two verses to the second person "you" and "your" in the rest of the psalm.

The opening is a declaration of where and to whom the Psalmist looks for help. The subsequent verses sound more akin to a personal meditation and an internal dialogue of faith, with the Psalmist reminding himself of the truths he is speaking.

It's been said that "we teach (and preach!) that which we most need to know"...and that is what the Psalmist seems to be doing here. Telling and retelling himself the truth of God's protection.

The psalm has a natural progression from first expressing a need, to then resolving that need with the comforting truth that the psalmist already believes, but needs to restate.

Today's text is Psalm 121:7-8. Today's text is in black, text from earlier in the week is in grey for context and catchup.

A song of ascents.

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Lord watches over you
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

7 The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.

Praise the Lord.
