The perfect Psalm for Labor Day
Unless the Lord guides and blesses our work, our labor is in vain

Meditation
Hi there,
It's Labor day today here in the US.
A national holiday established in 1894 that honors the American labor movement and the contributions of workers to the nation's strength, prosperity, and well-being.
So today's verses remind us that unless the Lord guides and blesses our work, our labor is in vain. However well intentioned, however earnest and however valuable.
It's particularly meaningful that Solomon is the author as he, as the King, was entrusted to build the House of David and guard the city.
In Solomon's God-given wisdom he understood that though God commanded and commended his efforts and the efforts and vigilance of his people. God's work and blessing are indispensible.
Today's text is Psalm 127:1-2
Psalm 127
A song of ascents. Of Solomon.
1 Unless the Lord builds the house,
the builders labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the guards stand watch in vain.
2 In vain you rise early
and stay up late,
toiling for food to eat—
for he grants sleep to those he loves.
3 Children are a heritage from the Lord,
offspring a reward from him.
4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
are children born in one’s youth.
5 Blessed is the man
whose quiver is full of them.
They will not be put to shame
when they contend with their opponents in court.
Encouragement
31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Matthew 6:31-33
