The Shunammite woman
Hospitality, discernment and quiet generosity mark this week's subject.

Meditation
Hi there,
This week is the last week in this series of passages highlighting the lives of women in the Bible. This week's example is a woman who is unnamed and is referred to simply as the Shunammite.
As we'll see, the story differs significantly in character from the stories of Abigail and Michal. Whereas Abigail and Michal were both married to David and lived their lives in royal courts and powerful households, the Shunammite lived a quiet life with her husband and provided generous hospitality to Elisha, the prophet.
Her story is immediately preceded by the better-known story of the miracle of the widow's oil.
We are told the Shunamite woman is well-to-do and that she habitually and generously provides hospitality to Elisha when he travels through Shunem. She is also discerning, recognizing Elisha as a holy man.
When Elisha offers to bless her for her kindness, she asks for nothing.
Today's verses are 2 Kings 4:8-13.
The Shunammite’s Son Restored to Life
8 One day Elisha went to Shunem. And a well-to-do woman was there, who urged him to stay for a meal. So whenever he came by, he stopped there to eat.
9 She said to her husband, “I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God. 10 Let’s make a small room on the roof and put in it a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay there whenever he comes to us.”
11 One day when Elisha came, he went up to his room and lay down there. 12 He said to his servant Gehazi, “Call the Shunammite.” So he called her, and she stood before him. 13 Elisha said to him, “Tell her, ‘You have gone to all this trouble for us. Now what can be done for you? Can we speak on your behalf to the king or the commander of the army?’”
She replied, “I have a home among my own people.”
Encouragement
Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.
