The surpassing worth of knowing Jesus
Fixing our eyes on what we have gained not what we have lost

Meditation
Hi there,
Paul no longer gets self-assurance from all of his worldly credentials. Why does he willingly give up those things that once gave him such confidence?
1. So that he may gain Christ (verse 8)
2. So that he may be found in Christ (verse 9)
3. So that he may know Christ (verse 10)
4. So that he may become like Christ (verse 10)
One day at church, one of our oldest church members was asked to say a prayer during the service. This quiet, white-haired woman, who had known many joys and sorrows, didn’t pray for an end to war or disease, or for the church to flourish, or for missionaries around the world.
Instead, her simple prayer was that every one of us in that room would come to know Jesus in a personal way. Her close relationship with Christ had sustained her through her long life, and she prayed the same for us. Hers was the voice of a spiritual mother in our midst.
Her prayer reminds me of Paul’s four points above. But don’t worry if you haven’t already achieved all of those things, because guess what? Neither has Paul!
Tomorrow we’ll copy out his encouraging words about not yet perfectly reaching these spiritual goals.
Today’s text is Philippians 3:8-11
8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith.
10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.
Encouragement
16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.
17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.
18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:16–18
