The "who" and the "how" of salvation
The "rod" is the instrument of God's wrath and his restoration.

Meditation
Hi there,
The fourth passage in the Advent series is taken from Isaiah 11 verses 1-4a, and then 6-9 (we'll copy these verses tomorrow.)
In chapter 10, Isaiah prophesied the destruction of Judah and Israel by the Assyrians, who he uses as "the rod of my anger." Their enfeebling descent into godlessness and spiritual torpor exposing them to a greater power.
But now we see the "rod" from Jesse's stump, which represents hope, restoration, and the establishment of a righteous and just kingdom under the leadership of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
The "rod" is the instrument of God's wrath and his restoration.
The Savior will arise from the stump to bear fruit again. Recalling the attributes we read in Isaiah 9, He will rule in the spirit of wisdom, the fear of the Lord, and righteousness.
Today's passage is Isaiah 11: 1-4a
Isaiah 11
And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
2 And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;
3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth:
Encouragement
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
