This week. An epic of biblical literature

This week, the attribute we are focused in on is Wisdom. We are going to explore it through one proverb. Proverbs 8.

Meditation

This week, the attribute we are focused in on is Wisdom. We are going to explore it through one proverb. Proverbs 8.

At 36 verses, Proverbs 8 will take us into a sixth day this week, but I'm certain you'll enjoy the extra day and the extra work.

The first nine chapters of Proverbs showcase the competition for the allegiance of humanity between two symbolic women—Wisdom and Folly.

Wisdom representing righteousness, life, and commitment to God’s order, and Folly, sin, destruction, and chaos. Put simply like this, the choice between the two seems simple, but as we know only too well, you and I are too easily inclined to pick the path of folly over the path of wisdom.

Proverbs 8 will contrast with the preceding chapters by presenting Wisdom not as an abstract concept or mere human virtue but as an eternal, divine figure intricately connected to God.

Which is why I picked it for this series.

I'll have more to say about these verses tomorrow. For now...Wisdom is calling.

Today's text is Proverbs 8:1-5

Wisdom’s Call

8 Does not wisdom call out?
Does not understanding raise her voice?
2 At the highest point along the way,
where the paths meet, she takes her stand;
3 beside the gate leading into the city,
at the entrance, she cries aloud:
4 “To you, O people, I call out;
I raise my voice to all mankind.
5 You who are simple, gain prudence;
you who are foolish, set your hearts on it.

6 Listen, for I have trustworthy things to say;
I open my lips to speak what is right.
7 My mouth speaks what is true,
for my lips detest wickedness.
8 All the words of my mouth are just;
none of them is crooked or perverse.
9 To the discerning all of them are right;
they are upright to those who have found knowledge.
10 Choose my instruction instead of silver,
knowledge rather than choice gold,
11 for wisdom is more precious than rubies,
and nothing you desire can compare with her.

Encouragement

"For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength."

1 Corinthians 1:25
