This week. James Chapter 2. Congregational living

James brings his teaching even closer to home.

Meditation

Hi there,

This week we are going to copy out chapter two of James. Beginning today with verses 1-4.

Last week, we copied chapter 1, in which James established his core theme: the necessity for faith to be both practical and active, grounded in perseverance to resist temptation and to find joy in trials.

Just as chapter 1 ended with specific applications and a test for one's religion, so chapter 2 begins with a case that is even closer to home. How we treat people in church.

How often do we listen to a sermon in church, develop a set of good intentions, and then do the opposite before we've even left the building?

Today's verses are James 2:1-4.

Favoritism Forbidden

2

My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in.

3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

Encouragement

27 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due,
when it is in your power to act.
28 Do not say to your neighbor,
“Come back tomorrow and I’ll give it to you”—
when you already have it with you.

Proverbs 3:27-28
