This week: The oldest song of the greatest story
An ancient victory that was as much for us as it was for Israel

Meditation
Hi there,
This week we are copying out another victory song.
One that has some similarities in context, emphasis and structure to the song of Moses and Miriam we copied last week from Exodus 15.
The song of Moses is the first song recorded in the Bible while the story (Judges 4) and song (Judges 5)of Deborah and Barak is considered the oldest written story in the Bible due to its use of archaic Hebrew.
Both songs retell the story of the preceding chapter and both credit the defeat of the oppressing enemy to God's direct intervention.
By immediately committing the history to song Deborah and Barak, just like Moses and Miriam, are inviting future generations (us!) to remember who really won the victory.
We weren't there, but the victory was as much for us as it was for them.
Today's text is Judges 5:1-5
The Song of Deborah
5 On that day Deborah and Barak son of Abinoam sang this song:
2 “When the princes in Israel take the lead, when the people willingly offer themselves— praise the Lord!
3 “Hear this, you kings! Listen, you rulers! I, even I, will sing to the Lord; I will praise the Lord, the God of Israel, in song.
4 “When you, Lord, went out from Seir, when you marched from the land of Edom, the earth shook, the heavens poured, the clouds poured down water.
5 The mountains quaked before the Lord, the One of Sinai, before the Lord, the God of Israel.
Encouragement
Given that this season is dedicated to the songs of the Bible, I'm including a musical accompaniment to each passage, which I hope will add to your enjoyment, recall and appreciation of the text.
George Frideric Handel composed this oratorio setting the story of Judges 4-5 to music and song.
Premiered in London, England in March 1733, It's over two hours long, but I have linked to one of the final movements below which corresponds to our passage.
It's uplifting as a song of celebration should be!
