We are vulnerable, but God is vigilant

He is always guarding us against dangers seen and unseen

Meditation

Hi there,

We're working through Psalm 121 very deliberately this week, taking time to consider each verse in depth.

Following on from yesterday's claim that "My help comes from the Lord," the writer details the vigilant protection He provides.

In the Bible, sleep is often seen as a sign of human limitation and vulnerability. We must sleep to rest and recharge, making us vulnerable to unexpected events and harm, especially at night.

God has no such vulnerability, guarding us against both seen and unseen dangers.

The repetition and progression from "slumber" to "sleep" reinforce this truth and also serve to highlight how different our God is from the pagan gods.

Gods like Baal, whom Elijah mocks in 1 Kings 18:27, by suggesting that perhaps Baal is “sleeping and must be awakened” when he fails to intervene at the behest of his prophets.

Today's text is Psalm 121:3-4. Today's text is in black, yesterday's text, and the text for tomorrow and Friday arer in grey for context and catch-up.

A song of ascents.

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

7 The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.

Praise the Lord.

Encouragement

Knowing that God never sleeps means that we can rest in peace, trusting that He is always in control.

“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.”

Psalm 4:8
