What are we waiting for?
The road to the nativity begins in the garden

Meditation
Hi there,
The "Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols" upon which I am basing this advent series begins with Genesis 3: 8-15.
Rather than joining Mary in the manger or the shepherds on the hills above Bethlehem surrounded by hosts of angels, the story begins at the point of humanity's greatest loss.
The fall of humanity through Adam and Eve's disobedience in the Garden of Eden is the ultimate 'reason for the season.' Reminding us of the origin of our brokenness and sinfulness and the impossibility of man saving himself.
To the modern ear, given to seeing Christmas as a period of celebration and excess, this reading seems incongruous, a bit of a downer, 'unseasonal' even.
But if we don't recognize unflinchingly what we have lost, then we can't truly understand what and who we are waiting for.
Today's passage is Genesis 3:8-10
Genesis 3
8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.
9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
Encouragement
Even in this, the darkest moment in human history, God is seeking his children. He does not hide from us.
On the contrary, he is always seeking after us. Even when we aren't seeking him.
Andy
P.S. I’m using the King James Version (KJV) for this series.
God's Word in Your Hand
The Nine Lessons and Carols service was originally devised by the first Bishop of Truro, Bishop Edward White Benson in 1880. This is a recorded Nine Lessons and Carols service (recorded in early December 2020) sung by Truro Cathedral Choir.
