Where does my help come from?

This season we have explored familiar songs, rendered in an unfamiliar format. Psalm 121 is one of the most familiar of all.

Hi there,

So far this season, we have covered Psalm 1, Psalm 23, Psalm 117, and then last week, in its entirety, Psalm 51.

During this last week of this season, we are going to take five Psalms from the Psalter, four from the Songs of Ascent, and then end with the last Psalm of the Psalter, Psalm 150.

Beginning today with Psalm 121.

This season we have explored familiar songs, rendered in an unfamiliar format, comparing the metrical version with the NIV (or your own translation).

The first verse of Psalm 121 is one of the most familiar in all Scripture.

¹ I to the hills will lift mine eyes,
from whence doth come mine aid.
² My safety cometh from the Lord, who heav’n and earth hath made.

³ Thy foot he’ll not let slide, nor will he slumber that thee keeps.
⁴ Behold, he that keeps Israel,
he slumbers not, nor sleeps.

⁵ The Lord thee keeps, the Lord thy shade on thy right hand doth stay:
⁶ The moon by night thee shall not smite, nor yet the sun by day.

⁷ The Lord shall keep thy soul; he shall preserve thee from all ill.
⁸ Henceforth thy going out and in God keep for ever will.

² My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

³ He will not let your foot slip
he who watches over you will not slumber;
⁴ indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

⁵ The Lord watches over you
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
⁶ the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.

⁷ The Lord will keep you from all harm he will watch over your life;
⁸ the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

Encouragement

²⁴ When you lie down, you will not be afraid;
when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
²⁵ Have no fear of sudden disaster
or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,
²⁶ for the Lord will be at your side
and will keep your foot from being snared.
